The most common source of avoidable crown and bridge remakes is not poor fabrication. It is a mismatch between what the dentist assumed and what the laboratory received. A material choice made without adequate space, a bite record taken after the patient has been numb for an hour, a shade note written as a single tab label on a bag: each of these creates a gap between clinical intent and laboratory output that no amount of technical skill can reliably close.

Choosing the Right Crown Material for the CaseAdequate preparation spaceEvery crown material has a minimum reduction requirement. Zirconia, e.max, PFM and gold each behave differently under limited space, and choosing a material the preparation cannot accommodate is the most common cause of a remade unit. Confirm the space before you commit to the material.A reliable bite recordA bite taken after a long anaesthetic, with the patient partially open, or across too many teeth produces an inaccurate mounting, and a crown that seats on the model will not seat in the mouth. A clean centric record is worth more than any lab adjustment.Shade communication for visible casesA single shade code without photography, stump shade information, or notes on the adjacent teeth is not enough for an aesthetic anterior unit. Send the substrate shade and photographs with a tab in frame, and the lab can match it the first time.
