Patients ask if veneers are removable because the SERP blurs two different products. Bonded porcelain veneers are not removable. Snap-on and clip-on appliances are. Here is how to separate them at the chair, and what we can fabricate.
Your patient has read a blog that mixes bonded porcelain with snap-on plastic, and now they want a definitive answer. We supply UK practices with both bonded indirect veneers and removable cosmetic appliances, so this guide draws the line for you. If you only need the bonded side, start with our veneer lab for dentists.
The Short Answer for Your Patient
A bonded porcelain or lithium disilicate veneer is not removable in any everyday sense. It is cemented to a prepared tooth and only a clinician can take it off, usually by sectioning it with a bur or laser. A removable veneer is a separate category, a clip-on or snap-on shell that sits over the natural teeth and lifts out by hand.
When a patient searches are veneers removable, they are almost always conflating these two. The job at the chair is to find out which one they actually mean before you quote anything. One is a permanent restoration, the other is a cosmetic overlay with no bond and no functional load.
- Bonded veneers: fixed restorations, removed only by a clinician, enamel already altered.
- Removable veneers: snap-on or clip-on appliances, taken out by the patient, no tooth preparation.
Why Bonded Porcelain Veneers Are Not Removable
Once a thin labial veneer is etched, silanated and bonded with resin cement, it becomes part of the tooth surface. There is no clean release. To remove it the clinician grinds through the ceramic and the cement lute, which is slow and almost always costs a little more enamel.
This is why the honest answer to are veneers permanent is yes, functionally. Even a conservative preparation removes some enamel, and enamel does not regenerate. If a bonded veneer comes off it has to be replaced with a new veneer or a crown, never left as bare tooth. Tell the patient that up front.

Snap-On and Clip-On Veneers: The Removable Category
Snap-on veneers and clip-on veneers are the same idea under two names. They are a single shell, usually a dental resin or flexible polymer, that clips over the front teeth and is removed for eating and cleaning. There is no bonding agent and no preparation, so nothing about the natural tooth is changed.
These are cosmetic only. They cover colour, minor shape and small gaps for photos or events, but they do not carry occlusal load and they do not support the bite. Patients often find chewing awkward and speech slightly altered at first. Frame them as a temporary aesthetic option, not a restoration.
- Reversible: no enamel removed, the patient can stop using them with no lasting change.
- Cosmetic scope: appearance only, no structural or functional support.
- Patient managed: removed daily for cleaning and meals.
How to Tell the Two Apart at the Chair
The fastest filter is one question: does the patient want their teeth changed, or covered. A patient who wants a lasting result and accepts some enamel reduction is a bonded veneer case. A patient who wants something they can take in and out, with no preparation, is a removable appliance case.
Cost and longevity follow from that. The related searches around how long do veneers last and are veneers expensive almost always refer to bonded work, which lasts years and is priced as a restoration. Removable shells are cheaper, sit over the teeth, and are replaced more often. Make sure the patient is comparing like for like before any number is mentioned.
- Wants permanence: route to bonded porcelain or lithium disilicate veneers.
- Wants reversibility: route to a snap-on or clip-on appliance.
- Unsure or anxious: a removable shell can be a low commitment trial before bonded work.
What Flora Can and Cannot Make
On the bonded side we fabricate indirect labial veneers in pressed lithium disilicate and feldspathic layered ceramic, to the prep and shade you prescribe. That is core lab work and it is where most of your veneer cases will sit.
On the removable side we can produce clip-on cosmetic shells from a model or intraoral scan. We are clear with you about their limits: they are aesthetic overlays, not load bearing, and we will not present them to your patient as an equivalent to bonded veneers. What we do not make is any product that claims to be a permanent veneer the patient can remove themselves, because that product does not exist.
- We fabricate: bonded labial veneers in lithium disilicate and feldspathic ceramic.
- We fabricate: removable clip-on cosmetic shells from a model or scan.
- We do not make: any veneer marketed as both permanent and patient removable.
When a Crown Is the Honest Recommendation
Some patients arrive set on veneers when the tooth needs more coverage than a veneer can give. Heavy wear, large existing restorations, root filled anteriors or a tooth carrying real occlusal load are crown cases, not veneer cases. A veneer placed over a compromised tooth fails early and the patient blames the cosmetic, not the diagnosis.
If the case crosses into full coverage, send it through as crown and bridge work instead. Our crown and bridge lab covers the materials and turnaround for those restorations so you are not forcing a veneer where a crown belongs.
What to Tell the Patient Who Read the Blog
The patient-facing pages they have read collapse two products into one word, so they expect a single yes or no. Give them three plain points and the confusion clears.
- Bonded veneers are permanent: a clinician removes them, and the tooth then needs a new veneer or a crown.
- Snap-on veneers are removable: they clip over the teeth, change nothing, and are cosmetic only.
- Going back to bare teeth is not an option for bonded cases: the enamel under a bonded veneer has already been reduced.
That framing answers can you go back to normal teeth after veneers honestly without scaring the patient off a treatment that suits them. It also stops them expecting a removable product to perform like a bonded one.
Sending a Case to Flora
We accept digital scans from 3Shape, Medit, iTero and Dexis, or conventional impressions. For bonded veneers send the prep design and shade. For a clip-on shell send a full arch scan or model and the shade you want matched. We are a UK lab serving UK practices, accredited to DAMAS, DLA and GDC, with crown and bridge turnaround around ten working days.
If you have not worked with us, your first case is free up to £100, with no invoice and no contract. Send one veneer case, judge the fit and the finish on a real patient, and decide from there.
Not sure which veneer route fits a specific patient? Send us the scan and a note, and we will tell you what we would and would not make for that case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are veneers removable?
It depends on the type. Bonded porcelain and lithium disilicate veneers are not removable by the patient; only a clinician can take them off, usually with a bur or laser. Snap-on and clip-on veneers are removable because they are unbonded cosmetic shells that clip over the natural teeth.
Are veneers permanent?
Bonded veneers are permanent in practice. The preparation removes a thin layer of enamel that does not grow back, so if the veneer is taken off the tooth needs a new veneer or a crown rather than being left bare. Removable clip-on shells change nothing and are not permanent.
What is the difference between snap-on veneers and clip-on veneers?
None of substance. Snap-on veneers and clip-on veneers are two names for the same product, a removable cosmetic shell that fits over the front teeth with no bonding and no tooth preparation. Both are appearance only and do not support the bite.
Can you go back to normal teeth after veneers?
Not after bonded veneers. Because enamel was reduced during preparation, the teeth always need some restoration afterwards, either a replacement veneer or a crown. After removable veneers there is no change to the teeth, so the patient simply stops wearing them.
Can Flora make removable veneers in the UK?
Yes. We can fabricate removable clip-on cosmetic shells from a model or intraoral scan for UK practices, alongside our bonded labial veneers. We are clear with you and your patient that clip-on shells are aesthetic only and not a substitute for a bonded restoration. See our veneer lab for dentists.
When should a tooth have a crown instead of a veneer?
When the tooth needs more than facial coverage. Heavy wear, large restorations, root treated anteriors or teeth under real occlusal load are crown cases, and a veneer placed over them tends to fail early. For those, use our crown and bridge lab rather than forcing a veneer.
